Port of Tyne welcomes Crown Estate round 6 offshore wind leasing
The Port of Tyne has expressed strong support for The Crown Estate’s launch of Round 6 offshore wind leasing, specifically targeting the North East Seabed area. This initiative is poised to unlock a substantial clean energy capacity exceeding six gigawatts, capable of powering over six million homes.
This development is anticipated to significantly accelerate the growth of the burgeoning offshore wind cluster in the North East of England, acting as a key driver for sustained green employment throughout the region.
Positioned as the closest deep-water port to the designated North East Seabed Leasing Area, the Port of Tyne is strategically located to provide essential support for the new projects that will arise from this leasing round.
The port boasts a proven history of supporting offshore wind projects, including contributions to the Dogger Bank, Sofia, and Hornsea 3 developments. It offers a comprehensive 230-acre development footprint spanning both banks of the River Tyne, complemented by specialized facilities and advantageous designations as an Investment Zone and Industrial Strategy Zone.
Port of Tyne CEO, Matt Beeton, remarked that The Crown Estate’s announcement injects further momentum into the regional cluster, building upon the port’s ongoing investments in infrastructure, skills development, and the Tyne Clean Energy Park. He emphasized the synergy between the port’s existing capabilities and the Mayor’s Green Energy Jobs Plan, noting that targeted infrastructure investment is a proven strategy for generating high-quality employment in the region.
The Round 6 leasing is expected to foster regional economic growth, fortify offshore wind supply chains, and create enduring job opportunities across the North East, thereby supporting the UK’s broader clean energy transition in the North Sea.
