PD Ports positions Teesport Offshore Gateway for wind expansion
PD Ports Unveils Teesport Offshore Gateway to Accelerate UK’s Offshore Wind Ambitions
PD Ports has announced definitive plans for the Teesport Offshore Gateway, a significant new facility on the River Tees. This strategic development is set to become the primary landing point for the next phase of the UK’s offshore wind programme, a positioning solidified by the Crown Estate’s recent Round 6 offshore auction announcement.
The Teesport Offshore Gateway is engineered to fill a crucial void in the UK’s offshore wind supply chain, offering extensive deep-water infrastructure for the manufacturing, assembly, and deployment of both fixed and floating offshore wind installations. Upon completion, it is poised to be the largest and most capable offshore wind port facility in the United Kingdom. Its features will include berths extending up to one kilometre, a water depth of 16 metres, and over 300 acres of dedicated supporting land within PD Ports’ existing Teesport estate.
Its prime geographical location offers a distinct advantage, being situated closest to the central North Sea licence plots anticipated to generate 6GW of new capacity. This proximity makes it an ideal and natural operational base for developers, manufacturers, and installation contractors operating in the region.
Economic projections indicate that the facility will deliver substantial economic benefits, contributing an estimated £270 million in gross value added annually to the local economy. Furthermore, it is expected to generate over 2,200 direct and indirect jobs.
PD Ports has already secured the necessary consents for deep-water berth development at the site and is actively progressing a planning variation to formalise its offshore wind usage. Advanced discussions are currently underway with key stakeholders, including developers, manufacturers, and installation partners. With a final investment decision, the Teesport Offshore Gateway could be operational as early as 2028.
Frans Calje, CEO of PD Ports, emphasized the facility’s potential to bridge a critical gap in the UK’s offshore wind supply chain infrastructure. He highlighted its direct support for the government’s ambitious ‘Clean Power 2030’ mission and its capacity to deliver significant economic advantages to the Teesside region.
