Maersk introduces and updates surcharges for Australia and New Zealand trade

Maersk has announced three tariff adjustments impacting cargo movements to and from Australia and New Zealand, scheduled to take effect in June and July 2026.

Port Chalmers Surcharges (New Zealand)
Effective July 1, 2026, Port Additional surcharges will be implemented for both export and import cargo at Port Chalmers, New Zealand. These rates, applicable to all container types and denominated in New Zealand dollars, will be NZ$35 for 20-foot units and NZ$70 for 40-foot and 45-foot units. These charges will apply to both outbound and inbound cargo movements between Port Chalmers and all global origins and destinations.

Equipment Positioning Service Adjustments (Australia & New Zealand)
The Equipment Positioning Service (EPS) charges for inland containers originating from Australia and New Zealand, routed via Tauranga and Brisbane to worldwide destinations, are being revised upwards.

* For exports via Tauranga: The rate will increase from NZ$105 to NZ$130 per unit.
* For exports via Brisbane: The rate will increase from AUD$205 to AUD$225 per unit.

These export charges will be effective from June 1, 2026, for non-regulated countries and from June 28, 2026, for regulated countries.

Similarly, the corresponding Equipment Positioning Service Import charge, for cargo moving from global origins via Tauranga to New Zealand and via Brisbane to Australia, will see the same rate revisions.

* For imports via Tauranga: The rate will increase from NZ$105 to NZ$130 per unit.
* For imports via Brisbane: The rate will increase from AUD$205 to AUD$225 per unit.

The effective dates for these import charges will mirror those for the export charges.
