Lufthansa Cargo launches first phase of €600 million Frankfurt cargo hub upgrade

Lufthansa Cargo has initiated the first phase of its transformative LCCevo infrastructure project at Frankfurt Airport, signaling the commencement of operations at the modernized cargo hub after the successful completion of its ALPHA construction phase. This significant undertaking represents a substantial investment of approximately €600 million aimed at revamping the Lufthansa Cargo Center (LCC) into Europe’s most advanced air cargo hub by 2030. The project encompasses an expansive 80,000 square meter facility.

The initial phase introduces sophisticated intelligent cargo handling systems, advanced automation, and state-of-the-art warehouse infrastructure. Lufthansa Cargo anticipates that these enhancements will significantly improve cargo flow, boost handling efficiency, and effectively support future expansion.

A cornerstone of this upgrade is a fully automated high-bay warehouse, standing at 42 meters tall. This facility provides nearly 3,000 storage positions for large cargo pallets and is capable of executing over 300 storage and retrieval operations per hour, effectively doubling its previous capacity. Additionally, the upgraded hub features an automated pallet warehouse specifically designed for temperature-sensitive and specialized cargo. Intelligent conveyor systems are integrated throughout the terminal to optimize and accelerate cargo movements across various handling processes.

Ashwin Bhat, CEO of Lufthansa Cargo, expressed enthusiasm for the project’s commencement, stating, “With the launch of phase ALPHA, a vision is becoming a reality. LCCevo is one of the most significant investments in our company’s history and a clear commitment to Frankfurt as an air cargo hub.” He highlighted Lufthansa Cargo’s crucial role in handling nearly half of all air freight at Frankfurt Airport and emphasized the project’s objective: “With intelligent cargo flows, state-of-the-art infrastructure and automated processes, we are creating the conditions necessary to continue meeting the demands of global markets. In doing so, we are strengthening our competitiveness, Germany’s competitiveness and laying the groundwork for further growth.”

Dr. Michael Niggemann, Member of the Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, affirmed the investment’s strategic importance for both Lufthansa Cargo and the broader Lufthansa Group. He commented, “Our investment of €600 million in the new LCCevo air cargo center is an important contribution to strengthening our leading position in the air cargo business. With this investment, we are strengthening Frankfurt as one of our most important international hubs and investing in the long-term performance of a location that is of central importance for connecting Germany to global markets.”

The project also received endorsement from government officials, who recognized its vital contribution to Germany’s logistics sector and international trade.

Future construction will proceed with the BRAVO and CHARLIE phases in the coming years. Upon completion, the LCCevo project will not only increase capacity but also incorporate significant sustainability measures. These include photovoltaic systems covering approximately 19,000 square meters of roof space, energy-efficient building technologies, heat recovery systems, and green roofs, all designed to minimize energy consumption and reduce emissions.
