HJSC and HD Hyundai Avikus partner on autonomous navigation technology
HJ Shipbuilding & Construction (HJSC) and HD Hyundai Avikus have formalized a strategic partnership to accelerate the advancement of autonomous navigation technology. This memorandum of understanding (MOU) underpins HJSC’s commitment to developing next-generation smart vessels and enhancing its competitive edge in the high-value shipbuilding sector.
The MOU was signed on June 4th in Athens during Posidonia 2026, with HJSC CEO Yoo Sang-cheol and HD Hyundai Avikus CEO Kang Jae-ho in attendance. Under this collaboration, HJSC will integrate HD Hyundai Avikus’ HiNAS Control autonomous navigation solution into its vessel designs and construction. The partnership also signifies an expansion of technological cooperation between the two entities.
HD Hyundai established Avikus in 2020 specifically to pioneer autonomous navigation solutions for the maritime industry. HiNAS Control, their flagship offering, is a Level 2 autonomous navigation system designed for large commercial vessels. This advanced platform leverages artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to significantly enhance navigation safety and operational efficiency, having been commercialized by HD Hyundai Avikus in 2022.
The growing global demand for smart ships, driven by shipowners’ pursuit of greater efficiency, safety, and digitalization, is prompting increased investment in autonomous vessel technologies from shipbuilders. HJSC anticipates that this partnership will bolster its competitiveness within the smart ship market, facilitate the adoption of autonomous navigation systems, and expand its presence in the next-generation vessel landscape.
Autonomous vessels are garnering significant industry interest due to their potential to reduce fuel consumption and labor costs, which constitute substantial portions of overall vessel operating expenses. South Korea’s government and its major shipbuilders are actively engaged in testing autonomous shipping technologies and collecting operational data to support their commercialization.
“As ship automation continues its rapid advancement, it is increasingly vital to proactively prepare for the future vessel market,” stated Yoo Sang-cheol, CEO of HJSC. “This agreement establishes a crucial foundation for our autonomous vessel development initiatives, and we are committed to continuously building a strong track record and refining our technological capabilities moving forward.”
