Hanwha Ocean and Leidos partner to boost naval shipbuilding capacity

Hanwha Ocean and Leidos have forged a strategic partnership to advance next-generation naval ship designs and enhance shipbuilding capacity for the United States and its allies. This collaboration synergizes Hanwha Ocean’s extensive shipbuilding expertise with Leidos’ renowned naval design and engineering acumen, with the objective of delivering production-ready solutions that meet stringent U.S. Navy requirements and address evolving global defense needs.

The partnership will focus on adapting Hanwha Ocean’s existing ship designs to align with U.S. Navy standards and will also involve the joint development of next-generation surface combatants for both U.S. and international markets. Furthermore, the companies intend to establish a robust and resilient supply chain spanning the United States and South Korea, while simultaneously developing ship designs optimized for expedited production and long-term maintainability.

Hanwha Ocean contributes significant experience in constructing advanced naval vessels, including submarines and surface ships. Its U.S. subsidiary, Philly Shipyard, is poised to assume an increasingly vital role in future naval programs. Leidos brings its advanced maritime technologies and formidable design capabilities to the table, notably through its Gibbs & Cox unit, which has been instrumental in designing over 70% of U.S. Navy surface combatants since World War II.

“This partnership presents a significant opportunity to solidify our standing in the global naval shipbuilding market,” stated Charlie SC Eoh, President of Naval Ship Business at Hanwha Ocean. “Our goal is to deliver cutting-edge solutions through close collaboration with Leidos.”

Mike Rickels, Senior Vice President for Maritime at Leidos, added, “By partnering with Hanwha, we are merging proven design excellence with world-class manufacturing capabilities. Together, we will deliver naval vessels engineered for today’s missions and equipped for the challenges of tomorrow.”

This collaboration underscores the increasing cooperation between the U.S. and South Korean shipbuilding industries in response to dynamic defense requirements.
