Genoa and Misurata strengthen cooperation on port and logistics development
Genoa and Misurata Forge Closer Ties to Enhance Mediterranean Port and Logistics Development
The Ports of Genoa recently hosted a delegation from the Misurata Free Zone, marking a significant step in fostering enhanced cooperation within the Mediterranean’s port and logistics sector. The visit, headquartered at the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority, provided the Libyan delegation an in-depth look at Genoa’s operational capabilities, ongoing infrastructure projects, and strategic future development plans.
This engagement was a key component of the Genova–Misurata Free Zone Meeting, an initiative championed by the Genoa Chamber of Commerce. During the visit, port authorities presented the Ports of Genoa and Savona-Vado, emphasizing their crucial role as a vital logistics gateway connecting Southern Europe with global markets. Discussions centered on the ports’ strategic geographical advantages, ongoing enhancements to rail and road connectivity, and the expansion of the E-port digital platform.
Furthermore, the Libyan delegation received a comprehensive update on the construction of Genoa’s ambitious new open-sea breakwater. This significant €1.4 billion project is poised to enhance the port’s capacity for larger container vessels, thereby strengthening its competitive standing in international trade. The visitors also had the opportunity to tour Genoa’s cargo and passenger terminals, as well as inspect shipbuilding and repair facilities located in Sestri Ponente and the Ship Repairs Area.
This meeting underscores a broader dialogue aimed at strengthening collaboration between the maritime and logistics communities of Genoa and Misurata. Both parties are actively exploring avenues for partnership across port management, logistics, specialized training, and innovation.
Matteo Paroli, President of the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority, highlighted the visit’s value in showcasing Genoa’s advanced logistics capabilities and its substantial €3.6 billion infrastructure investment program. He expressed optimism that intensified cooperation between Mediterranean ports can unlock new opportunities in logistics, operational efficiency, and economic growth.
