The Bahamas re-elected to IMO Council

The Bahamas has been successfully re-elected to Category C of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council, securing an impressive 73% of the vote in a competitive election. This significant achievement underscores the strong confidence and trust placed in The Bahamas by IMO Member States regarding its pivotal role in shaping international maritime regulations and its dedication to fair and effective decision-making within the global shipping industry.

This re-election ensures The Bahamas will continue to champion the interests of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and advance crucial priorities, including maritime safety and security, environmental protection, seafarer welfare, and innovation.

The Bahamas Maritime Authority (BMA) commends the dedicated efforts of its Maritime Affairs Department, whose leadership and technical expertise across IMO bodies have consistently strengthened The Bahamas’ reputation within the organization. The BMA also extends its gratitude to its broader team, including the Bahamas Permanent Representative to the IMO and other national agencies, whose collective commitment upholds the nation’s high regulatory standards.

This milestone empowers The Bahamas to continue playing a significant role in shaping the future of global shipping. The BMA eagerly anticipates continued collaboration with the IMO Secretariat, Member States, and industry partners to foster a safe, secure, sustainable, and innovative maritime sector.
