HD Hyundai Consolidates Shipbuilding Operations to Enhance Global Leadership and Drive Innovation

South Korea’s HD Hyundai has successfully merged its two prominent shipbuilding affiliates, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and HD Hyundai Mipo, into a unified entity now operating under the name HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. This strategic consolidation, confirmed by local sources, is designed to significantly bolster the company’s global competitiveness, broaden its market presence, and accelerate the development of cutting-edge, next-generation technologies.

The merger, a meticulously planned process, received board approvals in August, followed by clearance from the Fair Trade Commission in September, and culminating in a shareholder vote in November. Under the terms of the agreement, shareholders of HD Hyundai Mipo received 0.4059146 shares of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries for each of their existing shares. The newly unified company commenced operations immediately upon the finalization of all requisite procedures.

This combined entity has set an ambitious revenue target of 37 trillion won (approximately $25.2 billion) by 2035, with a significant portion of 10 trillion won projected to come from the defense sector. By integrating HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ established naval expertise with HD Hyundai Mipo’s extensive dock capacity and skilled workforce, the merged company is strategically positioned to solidify its status as the world’s foremost shipbuilder.

Furthermore, the company will actively support the substantial $150 billion “Make American Shipbuilding Great Again” (MASGA) initiative, a vital Korea-US collaborative project aimed at revitalizing the American shipbuilding industry. This merger also reinforces HD Hyundai’s strategic focus on the defense sector, the development of eco-friendly vessels, and specialized market segments such as icebreakers, anticipating growing demand in the Arctic region.

Chairman Chung Ki-sun articulated the significance of this milestone, stating, “Today marks a new chapter in Korea’s shipbuilding history. Combining our expertise and employee passion will spark a new wave of innovation.” Esteemed actor Kim Woo-bin, who has featured in HD Hyundai’s promotional campaigns, conveyed his congratulations, characterizing the merger as a pivotal step towards a more robust shipbuilding industry and a fresh start for Korea.

To expedite the creation of sustainable and future-ready technologies, the company will centralize its research and development and design functions. These strategic moves are expected to enable HD Hyundai to compete more effectively against its Chinese and Japanese rivals and significantly expand its global footprint, particularly within the United States and the defense market, as confirmed by local industry observers.
