DHL adds first Tesla Semi to North American fleet

DHL Supply Chain has significantly bolstered its commitment to sustainability with the integration of its first fully electric Tesla Semi into its North American fleet. This milestone vehicle expands DHL’s Class 8 electric vehicle (EV) fleet in the region to over 150 units.

The addition of the Tesla Semi directly supports DHL’s ambitious environmental targets: reducing CO₂e emissions by 29 million metric tons by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

During a trial conducted in Livermore, California, the Tesla Semi demonstrated its capabilities by operating for over 3,000 miles under regular freight hauling conditions. It consistently achieved an average efficiency of 1.72 kWh per mile while transporting loads up to 75,000 pounds on long-haul routes up to 390 miles.

Currently, the Tesla Semi is deployed from Central California, operating approximately 100 miles daily and requiring only a single charge per week. With a full charge, it boasts a range of up to 500 miles, even when fully loaded. This operational deployment is projected to reduce annual emissions by an estimated 50 metric tons.

Jim Monkmeyer, President of Transportation at DHL Supply Chain North America, highlighted the successful trial, stating, “The trial definitively proved the truck’s ability to manage real-world freight demands on a single charge. The Semi unlocks significant new possibilities for long-distance electric transportation.”

Tesla views DHL’s practical experience as invaluable for refining the Semi for broader global markets. DHL plans to further expand its adoption of the Tesla Semi in 2026, aligning with increased production. This strategic move is expected to not only lower supply chain emissions for its customers but also accelerate the company’s progress toward its overarching sustainability objectives.
