Port of Los Angeles tops 1 million TEUs in record June

The Port of Los Angeles achieved a record-breaking June, processing 1,002,734 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs). This milestone marks the busiest June in the port’s 118-year history and represents a 12% increase compared to the previous year. It is only the third time in history that the port has surpassed one million TEUs in a single month, a feat no other port in the Western Hemisphere has accomplished.

This exceptional performance was primarily fueled by robust import demand. Retailers and manufacturers strategically accelerated cargo shipments in anticipation of evolving trade policies, rising fuel costs, and persistent supply chain uncertainties.

“Exceeding one million containers for the third time and concluding our fiscal year with over 10.4 million TEUs are truly remarkable achievements,” stated Executive Director Gene Seroka. “We are particularly proud to have reached these heights without experiencing vessel backlogs or cargo delays.”

Detailed cargo statistics for June show loaded imports at 530,558 TEUs, a 13% year-on-year increase. Loaded exports remained stable at 126,365 TEUs. The volume of empty containers rose by 17% to 345,811 TEUs, reflecting the return of equipment to Asia.

For the first half of the year, the port handled a total of 5,122,603 TEUs, a 3% increase over the same period in the prior year.

During the monthly media briefing, Seroka highlighted that businesses are increasingly adapting their shipping schedules to dynamic market conditions rather than adhering to traditional seasonal patterns.
