Volkswagen Group of America Achieves Major Milestone at Port Freeport

Volkswagen Group of America has marked a significant operational achievement, having successfully shipped over 250,000 vehicles through Port Freeport. This milestone underscores the success of the company’s Gulf Coast vehicle processing hub, established at the Texas port. The achievement was reached on May 28, 2026, approximately two years after operations began in early 2024, following the hub’s announcement in 2022.

The Port Freeport facility serves as a critical import and distribution center for Volkswagen and Audi vehicles, supplying nearly 300 dealerships nationwide. The Volkswagen Group’s comprehensive portfolio also includes esteemed brands such as Porsche, Lamborghini, and Bentley.

Rob Giesecke, Chairman of the Port Freeport Commission, lauded the milestone as a testament to a robust partnership that not only bolsters local employment and stimulates economic growth in Brazoria County and Texas but also fortifies national supply chains.

Elliott Hughes, Port Manager for Volkswagen Group of America at Freeport, credited the accomplishment to the collaborative efforts of terminal teams, support staff, and regional partners, emphasizing that it is a direct result of trust, collaboration, and an unwavering commitment to reliable and sustainable operations.

Phyllis Saathoff, Executive Director and CEO of Port Freeport, extended congratulations to Volkswagen for its operational success. She highlighted the achievement as a clear demonstration of the value derived from strategic infrastructure investment and strong partnerships.

Port Freeport is recognized as a leading U.S. port, ranking among the top for crude oil and natural gas liquids exports, sixth nationally for chemicals, and thirteenth in total foreign waterborne tonnage. A 2022 economic impact study conducted by the Texas A&M Transportation Institute revealed that the Freeport Harbor Channel is responsible for generating 266,300 jobs nationally and contributes $157.3 billion in total economic output.
