OPCSA expands hybrid RTG fleet in Canary Islands
Operaciones Portuarias Canarias S.A. (OPCSA) has placed an order with Konecranes for four additional diesel-hybrid Rubber-Tired Gantry (RTG) cranes. This order was confirmed in the first quarter of 2026, with delivery anticipated in the fourth quarter of the same year. These new cranes will complement OPCSA’s significant investment in eight hybrid RTGs made in 2025. Upon their arrival, the terminal will boast a fleet of 18 Konecranes RTGs, underscoring a sustained commitment to technological advancement.
OPCSA manages a key container terminal within the Port of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The company is actively modernizing its equipment to effectively manage increasing cargo volumes, enhance operational efficiency, and demonstrably reduce its environmental footprint.
The diesel-hybrid RTG cranes incorporate advanced energy recovery systems, capturing and reusing energy generated during lifting operations. This technology significantly reduces fuel consumption, lowers emissions, and ultimately curtails operating expenses when contrasted with traditional diesel-powered cranes.
The decision to acquire these new cranes by OPCSA is driven by the objective to bolster yard performance while simultaneously advancing their sustainability objectives. Furthermore, the machines are equipped with integrated safety features, including an Anti-Truck Lift Prevention System and a gas-based fire prevention system, ensuring enhanced operational security.
This acquisition aligns with Konecranes’ Ecolifting initiative, a program dedicated to fostering the gradual decarbonization of port operations through a suite of solutions, from hybrid systems to fully electric and forthcoming hydrogen-powered equipment.
Through this strategic expansion, OPCSA reaffirms its dedication to maintaining efficient, safe, and environmentally responsible container handling practices.
