ICTSI launches South Luzon Container Terminal project
International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) has officially inaugurated the South Luzon Container Terminal (SLCT) project, situated at the Bauan International Port in Batangas, Philippines. This significant $800 million development, positioned approximately 110 kilometers south of Manila, is poised to become the nation’s second-largest container terminal. The SLCT is strategically designed to enhance trade capabilities across Southern Luzon and to facilitate the movement of industrial, manufacturing, and energy-related cargo.
Major Infrastructure Development
Upon completion of its full development, the SLCT will boast an impressive infrastructure suite:
* An 800-meter quay
* A 38-hectare container yard
* A berth depth of 18 meters
* An annual capacity exceeding 2 million TEUs
The terminal is slated for completion in 2028 and will be equipped to handle ultra-large container vessels.
Construction and Equipment
Phase 1 of the project encompasses marine works and the construction of a 425-meter quay specifically designed for super post-Panamax vessels. Construction activities are scheduled to take place from May to September 2027, with equipment installation commencing in August 2027. The terminal will be outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment, including:
* Eight remote-controlled ship-to-shore cranes
* Twenty rail-mounted gantry cranes
* Thirty-two diesel-hybrid carriers and handlers
Government Endorsement
The launch ceremony was graced by the presence of distinguished officials, including Giovanni Z. Lopez, acting secretary of the Department of Transportation (Philippines), and Ariel F. Nepomuceno, commissioner of the Bureau of Customs (Philippines). Additionally, former Prime Minister of Japan, Yukio Hatoyama, attended the event.
Christian R. Gonzalez, ICTSI Executive Vice President, emphasized that the project underscores the vital importance of robust collaboration between the private sector and government in delivering essential infrastructure. The SLCT project aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s national infrastructure initiative, the “Build Better More” program.
