MSC announces multiple surcharges across global routes
MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has announced a series of adjustments to freight rates and the introduction of new surcharges across several key trade routes. These changes are scheduled to take effect from mid-March through early April 2026.
Key Rate Adjustments and Surcharges:
* India and Pakistan to Europe: New freight rates will be implemented effective March 16, 2026, valid until March 31, 2026.
* Nhava Sheva to Antwerp: $2,150 per 20-foot and 40-foot container.
* Nhava Sheva to Valencia: $2,250 per container.
* Rates from Ennore and Kolkata to European destinations will be higher.
* Emergency Fuel Surcharge (Northern Europe to Indian Subcontinent): Starting March 16, 2026, an Emergency Fuel Surcharge will apply.
* Dry units: $100 per TEU.
* Reefer units: $150 per TEU.
* Peak Season Surcharge (Europe to Southern Africa): Effective April 2, 2026, a Peak Season Surcharge will be introduced, attributed to strong demand.
* South Africa: $125 per TEU.
* Namibia: $150 per TEU (reefer containers will incur higher charges).
* Mozambique: $250 per TEU (reefer containers will incur higher charges).
MSC stated that this surcharge is necessary to maintain service levels.
* Additional Emergency Fuel Surcharges: Further Emergency Fuel Surcharges will be applied on routes connecting Northern Europe with destinations including Italy, the Red Sea, East Africa, the West Mediterranean, the Adriatic, Australia, and New Zealand. Specific rates will vary depending on the route and container type.
It is important to note that all announced surcharges and rate adjustments are in addition to existing charges. This includes, but is not limited to, bunker recovery charges, emissions trading system fees, and terminal handling charges. These new rates and surcharges apply to freight-all-kinds cargo, with the exclusion of IMO category commodities and high-value commodities.
