Container throughput at Ishikari Bay New Port falls 2.6% in 2025
Container throughput at Ishikari Bay New Port, located in Japan’s northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido, experienced a decline in 2025. Preliminary figures released by the Ishikari Bay New Port Authority and reported by JIFFA indicate that the port handled a total of 47,281 TEUs of foreign-trade containers throughout the year, marking a 2.6% decrease from the preceding calendar year.
Export volumes saw a 4.3% reduction, totaling 22,873 TEUs. Within this category, recycled materials decreased by 4.3% to 2,376 TEUs, and fishery products fell by 5.1% to 1,589 TEUs. Conversely, auto parts and components demonstrated significant growth, increasing by 18% to reach 988 TEUs.
On the import side, the port handled 24,408 TEUs, a 1% year-on-year decline. Wood products were the largest import category, with a slight increase of 1.7% to 7,096 TEUs. Furniture imports declined by 5.7% to 3,186 TEUs, while other daily necessities accounted for 2,803 TEUs, representing a 5.9% decrease.
