Imabari Shipbuilding to take majority stake in Hitachi Zosen Marine Engine

Imabari Shipbuilding is set to increase its ownership in Hitachi Zosen Marine Engine (HZME), acquiring a significant stake from Kanadevia. This strategic share transfer will result in Imabari Shipbuilding becoming the majority shareholder in the joint venture.

Following the transaction, Imabari Shipbuilding’s shareholding in HZME will rise from 35% to 60%, while Kanadevia’s stake will decrease from 65% to 40%.

HZME, established in November 2022 as a joint venture between Imabari Shipbuilding and Kanadevia, is dedicated to the marine engine sector. Its core activities include marine engine supply, the operation of sales and service networks, material procurement, and the development of carbon-neutral technologies. HZME officially assumed operations of Kanadevia’s marine engine business in April 2023.

This ownership change is driven by a shared strategic objective to bolster competitiveness within the evolving shipbuilding market, enhance mass production capabilities, and expedite the development of decarbonisation solutions.

The completion of this transaction is contingent upon obtaining the necessary competition and regulatory approvals in Japan and internationally.

Industry observers anticipate that this move will significantly strengthen Japan’s shipbuilding sector and foster deeper collaboration on the development of next-generation marine engines.
