Imabari Shipbuilding delivers 64,000 dwt bulk carrier Agatti Island

Imabari Shipbuilding has announced the delivery of the Agatti Island, a 64,000 dwt bulk carrier, following its completion at the company’s Head Office and Imabari Shipyard. The vessel was officially handed over on January 27, 2026.

The Agatti Island is an ocean-going Handymax bulk carrier designed and constructed in adherence to the Common Structural Rules for Bulk Carriers and Oil Tankers (CSR BC & OT). Its design prioritizes efficient cargo handling and offers flexible trading capabilities.

Each cargo hold is equipped with topside and hopper tanks, enabling the vessel to accommodate a diverse range of cargoes, including grain, coal, ore, cement, steel coils, and long steel products. The vessel also meets the stringent requirements of the International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes (IMSBC) Code and the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code.

To further enhance operational efficiency, the Agatti Island features wide cargo hatch openings, folding-type hatch covers, and four deck cranes, which facilitate quicker loading and discharge operations.

Environmental performance was a significant consideration in the vessel’s design. It complies with the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) and the Ballast Water Management Convention. Notably, its Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) satisfies both Phase 2 and the more advanced Phase 3 requirements, which are applicable to ships constructed from 2025 onwards. The vessel is also fitted with a ballast water treatment system and an Inventory of Hazardous Materials, in line with the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships.

The Agatti Island achieves high propulsion efficiency through the integration of various energy-saving devices, a high-efficiency propeller, and advanced low-friction hull coating.
