Liberian Registry names Kyle Hurst as SVP

The Liberian Registry is pleased to announce the appointment of Kyle Hurst as Senior Vice President of Fleet Communications and Technology.

With over 30 years of extensive experience in vessel and satellite communications within the maritime sector, Hurst will assume responsibility for overseeing the Registry’s fleet satellite systems, Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), and a broad range of other communication technologies. He will also collaborate closely with the Registry’s leadership team to ensure robust regulatory compliance and spearhead the development of innovative, future-ready communication systems.

“This is a dynamic and pivotal moment for the maritime industry,” stated Hurst. “Given the evolving landscape of safety, security, the adoption of S-100 standards, and the advent of autonomous vessels, I am honored and proud to join the world’s largest ship registry.”

Prior to this appointment, Hurst dedicated 10 years to Iridium, where he played a key role in shaping the company’s maritime strategy and successfully managed the global deployment of Iridium GMDSS. This initiative significantly disrupted a 30-year industry monopoly and notably enhanced maritime safety standards.

Earlier in his career, Hurst was instrumental at Inmarsat in the introduction of FleetBroadband, a pioneering service that brought essential IP connectivity to global shipping operations. His diverse background also encompasses valuable experience in fisheries management, marine enforcement, and military service.

“Kyle’s appointment underscores our unwavering commitment to attracting and retaining top-tier talent,” commented Alfonso Castillero, CEO of the Liberian Registry. “His proven industry leadership and forward-thinking vision will be instrumental in elevating our fleet communications capabilities and enhancing safety standards across the global maritime community.”
