HYDS to Build Hydrogen Electrolyser in the Port of Gothenburg
The Norwegian hydrogen company Hydrogen Solutions (HYDS) is set to establish a green hydrogen production facility at the Port of Gothenburg. This significant investment will enhance the port’s position as a key hub for fossil-free fuels, facilitating the transition of various transport sectors operating within and around the port. Production is anticipated to commence by 2029.
This development builds upon a collaborative agreement signed in 2021 between the Port of Gothenburg and Norwegian energy company Statkraft to explore the feasibility of hydrogen production within the port. Project progression has been steady, including the successful completion of necessary permitting processes for the electrolyzer’s construction.
HYDS has now acquired the project company from Statkraft, which includes the lease agreement with the Port of Gothenburg, the environmental permit for the facility, and secured external financing. With these crucial elements in place, the project is poised for a swift start-up phase, with HYDS targeting green hydrogen production to begin in 2029.
The planned facility will have a capacity of five to ten MW, capable of producing two to four tonnes of hydrogen daily. This output is equivalent to approximately 20,000 liters of diesel and has the potential to reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 60 tonnes per day.
Viktor Allgurén, Head of Innovation at the Port of Gothenburg, emphasized the port’s commitment to embracing a diverse range of fuels and highlighted how this green hydrogen production will be instrumental in enabling a broader shift across multiple transport modes. The Port of Gothenburg is actively developing infrastructure to offer a variety of fossil-free fuels, catering to diverse transportation needs.
The port already hosts Hydri, a hydrogen company operating a public refueling station within its premises, serving hydrogen-powered vehicles and machinery. The progression of HYDS’s electrolyzer plans signifies the port’s move towards a complete hydrogen ecosystem, encompassing production, distribution, and end-use.
For HYDS, establishing operations at the Port of Gothenburg represents a strategic move into a location with substantial demand for green hydrogen. The new facility will utilize renewable electricity and water to produce green hydrogen, which will then be distributed and sold to external clients. This hydrogen can be stored and deployed across various transport sectors, particularly for heavy-duty applications, offering a clean alternative with virtually no emissions beyond water vapor.
