Port of Shanghai handles 55.06 million TEUs in 2025
The Port of Shanghai solidified its position as the world’s busiest container port for the sixteenth consecutive year in 2025, handling an impressive 55.06 million TEUs, marking a 6.9% increase from the previous year. International transshipment volumes saw significant growth, reaching 7.911 million TEUs, up 10.6%. The Yangshan Deep-Water Port Area was a key driver of this success, recording a 10.4% growth and accounting for 52.1% of the total throughput. Notably, the Phase III Terminal surpassed 10 million TEUs for the first time. These achievements underscore the port’s enhanced operational efficiency, rapid vessel turnaround times, and high berth utilization.
Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) continued its aggressive digital transformation across its terminals. The integration of automated systems, digital twins, AI stowage models, and smart yards demonstrably boosted productivity, minimized re-stows, and optimized truck operations. Sea-rail intermodal volumes surged by 16.1% to over 1 million TEUs, facilitated by advanced digital tools, including blockchain technology, which improved data sharing and reduced overall logistics costs.
In 2025, the port also made substantial strides in its green initiatives. Shanghai became the first port globally to bunker domestically produced green methanol and saw increased adoption of shore power, leading to a reduction in energy intensity. Terminals earned prestigious five-star “Green Port” ratings, reflecting a strong commitment to environmental sustainability. SIPG actively engaged in international partnerships to promote low-carbon shipping corridors.
Service innovation played a crucial role in the port’s performance. The implementation of the “Four-Duals” model and all-tide “Triple-Berthing/Unberthing” operations significantly reduced vessel turnaround times and unlocked millions of TEUs in additional capacity. Furthermore, streamlined customs procedures and integrated supply chain services enhanced responsiveness and decreased operational expenses.
Looking ahead, SIPG is committed to further strengthening its hub capabilities and vessel handling efficiency, expanding international transshipment and multi-modal logistics. The group will deepen its digital transformation by integrating advanced technologies such as AI, 5G, BeiDou, and blockchain. Future plans include advancing green energy bunkering, reducing carbon intensity, and championing global green shipping standards. SIPG also aims to enhance inter-port collaboration, broaden its overseas presence, and offer comprehensive one-stop logistics services. The ultimate vision is to establish a modern, smart, and low-carbon port system that not only supports domestic and international trade but also leads the global port sector in decarbonization efforts.
