Collaboration lifts yard crane productivity at Port Houston
Kaleris successfully completed a multi-phase rollout of its RTG Optimization (RTG-O) solution at Port Houston, achieving significant performance improvements across the port’s two primary container terminals: Barbours Cut and Bayport. This initiative enhances the operational efficiency of Port Houston’s 142 rubber-tyred gantry cranes, which manage up to 12,000 daily truck visits. Port Houston aimed to maximize the utility of its existing assets while ensuring uninterrupted daily operations.
Kaleris collaborated closely with Port Houston and labor representatives from the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) to align terminal workflows with RTG-O’s logic and reinforce data integrity. This partnership facilitated seamless integration and enabled real-time, demand-driven decision-making.
The implemented RTG-O solution has yielded tangible results, including a productivity increase of up to 20% for yard cranes. Operator and dispatcher workflows have been optimized, and enhanced data visibility supports more informed fleet management and accelerates gate throughput, even during peak periods.
Port Houston adopted a phased deployment strategy, commencing with over-the-road truck moves in a controlled yard area. This approach allowed for the incorporation of early learnings to refine system filters and workflows, ultimately improving both user experience and overall system performance before a broader rollout.
Ryan Mariacher, Chief Port Operations Officer at Port Houston, stated, “RTG-O works hand in hand with the skilled labor of the ILA and elevates our terminal performance.” He further noted that the system aligns with the port’s strategic objective of maintaining its position as a cost-effective, high-service gateway amidst growing container volumes.
Kaleris CEO Kirk Knauff remarked that this project exemplifies the synergy achieved when terminal operators and technology providers collaborate effectively. He highlighted that advanced optimization tools like RTG-O empower terminals to enhance productivity, agility, and operational resilience.
