PIL expands LNG fleet with delivery of Kota Orkid

Pacific International Lines (PIL) has further solidified its dedication to environmental responsibility and forward-thinking operations with the recent delivery of its eighth Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)-powered vessel, the Kota Orkid. This milestone underscores PIL’s ongoing commitment to sustainable maritime practices.

This year alone has seen PIL welcome four “O” Class vessels, and since 2024, the company has augmented its fleet with four additional 14,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel ships. Looking ahead, PIL has a robust order book featuring twelve more LNG dual-fuel vessels, comprising five 13,000 TEU and seven 9,000 TEU ships, scheduled for delivery in the coming years.

Lars Kastrup, CEO of PIL, highlighted the significance of these advancements, stating, “The Kota Orkid is a clear testament to how PIL’s fleet is progressively becoming cleaner, smarter, and more efficient. By actively adopting greener fuels and integrating advanced digital systems, we are ensuring that PIL remains a sustainable, resilient, and future-ready player in global trade.”

The Naming Ceremony for the Kota Orkid was attended by key figures, including Mr. Ren Letian, Chairman and CEO of Yangzijiang Shipbuilding; Mr. S.S. Teo, Executive Chairman of PIL; Mrs. Annie Yap, the Lady Sponsor; and Mr. Yap Chee Keong, an Independent Board Director of PIL, who participated in the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Each of PIL’s new LNG-powered vessels are equipped with next-generation engines designed to significantly reduce methane emissions and are capable of running on bio-methane fuels, offering an even cleaner alternative. Further enhancing their efficiency, these vessels feature advanced hydrodynamic hull designs and state-of-the-art anti-fouling coatings, all contributing to reduced fuel consumption.

The arrival of the Kota Orkid signifies PIL’s continuous and determined progress toward establishing a sustainable, technologically advanced fleet. This strategic evolution is geared towards meeting the dynamic demands of the international shipping industry while making substantial strides in lowering the company’s carbon footprint.
