LR updates rules to cover wind propulsion and crew safety
Lloyd’s Register (LR) has announced significant updates to its classification standards, designed to champion the adoption of wind propulsion technologies and elevate crew safety protocols at sea. These new measures, officially revealed this week, are slated to become effective on January 1, 2026.
The revised rules introduce critical technical notations, specifically tailored for Wind-Assisted Propulsion Systems (WAPS and WAPS*), and incorporate a new ergonomic design standard (EASE). These advancements reflect LR’s commitment to fostering sustainable shipping practices while simultaneously prioritizing the well-being and operational efficiency of maritime personnel.
