LR updates rules to cover wind propulsion and crew safety
Lloyd’s Register (LR) has unveiled a set of advanced classification standards designed to champion the adoption of wind propulsion technologies and significantly bolster crew safety at sea. These crucial updates, announced this week, are slated to come into effect on January 1, 2026.
The new rules introduce specialized technical notations, including WAPS and WAPS* for wind-assisted propulsion systems, and EASE for ergonomic design, reflecting a forward-thinking approach to maritime operations. Furthermore, LR has also refined its existing guidelines to complement these innovations, reinforcing its commitment to fostering safer and more sustainable shipping practices across the industry.
