LR updates rules to cover wind propulsion and crew safety

Lloyd’s Register (LR) has announced significant updates to its classification standards, designed to bolster the adoption of wind propulsion technologies and enhance crew safety at sea. These revised rules, unveiled this week, are set to come into effect on January 1, 2026.

Key among the updates are new technical notations for wind-assisted propulsion systems (WAPS and WAPS*), acknowledging and standardizing the integration of these sustainable solutions. Additionally, LR has introduced an ergonomic design notation (EASE), emphasizing the importance of creating safer and more efficient working environments for maritime personnel. These revisions underscore LR’s commitment to advancing both environmental sustainability and human welfare within the shipping industry.
