LR updates rules to cover wind propulsion and crew safety
Lloyd’s Register (LR) has unveiled significant updates to its classification standards, designed to advance the adoption of wind propulsion technologies and elevate crew safety at sea. These new regulations, announced this week, are scheduled to come into effect on January 1, 2026.
Key among the revisions are the introduction of specialized technical notations for Wind-Assisted Propulsion Systems (WAPS and WAPS*), alongside new provisions for ergonomic design (EASE). These additions aim to provide clear guidelines and support for the integration of sustainable propulsion methods and enhance the well-being of seafarers. LR has also refined other aspects of its framework to address evolving industry needs.
